It is an awful day for hundreds and hundreds of EmblemHealth employees in New York. They were notified that the contract with Cognizant was signed. We did not stop it. They are being fired in 90 days. Before they are fired they will have to train their foreign replacements. In fact, some are already training their foreign replacements. The customers’ data is going to be accessible in India and other foreign countries.

The employees are completely distraught. EmblemHealth’s millionaire CEO KAREN IGNAGNI stated in a video to the employees that she is sad that the employees have to be fired but it is best for the company. The company needed innovation which apparently could not be done by Americans. The millionaire CEO KAREN IGNAGNI is not losing one penny of her salary to help the company; she is just throwing away her loyal and trustworthy American workers instead.

Goodbye America……

kwho Why does IT employee of any firm who’s business is not core IT think it is wise to reinvent the same wheel again and again? EmblemHealth has to compete in this rough market and serve their customers at cost efficient way possible otherwise who will use their service. If they lose customers this same employees would lose their job eventually. No customer wants to pay more for same or similar service pro When Uber/Lyft came I bet same IT employees would have celebrated and are using it for their advantage (saves cost and hassle of calling Cab), but they don’t want their company to move out of old system just because they have employees who was working on it. It is wise decision not to reinvent same thing for which there are companies that can do better job or already have mature product that can be customized. Getting ride of inefficient system is part of business decision and it has nothing to do with employees (loyal or not). nyteshades It’s managements call as to how to allocate IT resources and set their priorities. So when IT folk see crap like this, it is a slap in the face. This clearly says, management screwed up….we’re blaming IT, the guys over there at Cognizant do it cheaper than we could, and as the new CEO my job is to make as much money for the company as possible….because my bonus depends on it. Outsourced/hosted IT resources and systems, are rarely adequate replacements for in house stuff. Especially with innovations in the cloud and what not. Oh, and why not outsource other departments as well? Like accounting, marketing, security, etc. Oh, and make no mistake about it, the board hired her with the sole purpose of doing exactly this. kwho Again their core business is not IT and no matter how they try it they can be at most average in delivering or getting anything done. When you give a task to an expert or who has already developed similar product they can delivery really good product with better pricing. I never seen any IT company that could retain experts, they generally stuck with a decade old system and people who worked on it. Whenever they want to try new approach same people will make sure it fails and make sure company continue to use old system. Again you don’t have to maintain house staff for everything you do as part of business. Look at any IT company most never have payroll system that was developed or maintained by them. They go to people like ADP who has expertise in it and well versed with laws associated with it. It is similar situation, EmblemHealth did tried it for decades and saw there is very little ROI in maintaining in house IT division. Does that mean they can be successful? not necessarily. This is one of many strategy company tries to reduce cost and improve their competitiveness. Just there is human factor involved doesn’t mean EmblemHealth has to suffer and fail to compete and close the business. They would rather try and fail in this strategy than not trying in the name of human factor. Is it a harsh decision? yes for sure, but is it totally wrong one to take in an attempt to save the business, definitely not. You cannot ask a company to fail entirely just because they have to retain decade old employees. People are part of the company but other way around is not right. Every employee of any field should be aware that no company has to be loyal to their employees and no employee has to be loyal to one employer. Employee has to love their profession or job but not the company that they work to execute it. nyteshades There’s a large difference between purchasing an application or system to handle payroll with a smaller staff and completely outsourcing the entire department save the accounting director. While I’m sure there was a little bit of development going on at EmblemHealth. Most of these jobs are going to be centered around desktop, network support, probably a few data warehouse people, some DBA’s, application specialists, etc. These are the everyday positions in every company. This is the house staff you need to run a large organization. What EmblemHealth did here, was tell the entire IT Dept you are being outsourced to Cognizant because they are cheaper. And the funny thing about that, is EmblemHealth is going to be losing a large part of their institutional knowledge for cheap labor. What’s that worth to a company? What does the morale hit cost the company? This isn’t about competitiveness as much as it is about making the books look better. Again, the books are in bad shape because of decisions made by mgmt and now rank and file has to pay the price. Don’t misunderstand me, I very well understand businesses are about making money and have zero allegiance. There are times where you reduce over head to survive, or hold off on projects until business and revenue is better. This isn’t that. This is throwing a significant part of the business under the bus for a dollar and then patronizing them about loyalty. This is on par with outsourcing manufacturing back in the 70s. kwho Looks like you are not sure what direction IT world is moving. Why should EmblemHealth maintain big IT division if it makes no business sense. There could be few positions that would monitor the work done by vendor other than that they have no reason to run a big IT shop. Who told you outsourcing is cheaper? initial numbers are always will look cheaper but once everything said and done they could save few millions here and there not super big. Again, why should a company has to maintain an IT division unless it was their core business. Today it make sense for them to move it out and focus on core business and just ask their vendor on deliverable. It is huge risk mitigation for a company that doesn’t do IT as core business. Now all the issues related to failure of IT stuffs are moved to a vendor with SLA. Why you keep claiming IT is significant part of their business? It is not no matter how you want to put it. No company wants to run data centers now under their roof, even IT companies try to go for cloud so that there is huge risk mitigation associated with hardware and technology maintenance. You seem to stuck with human factor alone in this and not able to think anything out of that. Why not a company make their book look better? why should they have to keep their book ugly just to be nice and called great employer. Did anyone every praised this company for running a IT division for this long? Did anyone offered to help reduce their cost, improve efficiency and manage with less risk? They are not here to serve their employees, they are here to serve the customers and whatever it takes to make their customer/stockholder happy they will do it. nyteshades Good talk. kwho Nice discussion and thanks for not throwing insults and finding grammar or issue with language. It happens very rarely and I enjoyed conversation with you but still as a human I feel for everyone who lost their job. unsolicitedmail So sorry for the great IT workers of EmblemHealth. Cases like these, where American companies outsource IT or any other function overseas should be hit with a huge tax. We must pass legislation making it cost prohibitive for this practice to continue. Also, if you are a foreign company wanting to do business with the US, guess what, you have to pay your workers the same rate of average as their American counterpart. How’s that for a even playing field! tenminutetokyo . We must pass legislation 1) banning all foreign lobbying, 2) banning all foreign access to our PR companies and media. India’s NASSCOM lobby gives MILLIONS of dollars to US members of congress every year. That’s foreign influence. And it needs to be outlawed. Foreign lobbying is a big reason why this does not stop. And ALL foreign workers of any kind are illegal if their working in USA “Adversely affects the wages or working conditions of American workers” (TITLE 8, Section 1182 INADMISSIBLE ALIENS).

And ALL foreign workers of any kind are illegal if their working in USA “Adversely affects the wages or working conditions of American workers” (TITLE 8, Section 1182 INADMISSIBLE ALIENS).

Dudeski A case in point that I wish to express is the technical impact of Cognizant on the actual health care and insurance computer systems. It is stunning to me that a health insurance company would turn over it’s IT operations to cheap foreign labor. Current experienced technical staff have years of intricate business rule knowledge. This knowledge allows them to solve problems fast and efficiently. The Cognizant crowd comes in the door – no knowledge of the business software systems and its business intent. The intricate complexities of health care software is enormous, the computers programs are huge, the connectivity architecture is immense, only experienced software staff can operate at this scale. What can go wrong? Here is what can go wrong, from an IT Consultant’s Point of View: Health Insurance computer systems are very complex and expansive, with many moving parts. H-1B Individuals performing a “knowledge transfer” duly record key strokes and screen shots of the system from the betrayed EmblemHealth Insurance IT staff. The Knowledge Transfer process only lasts for a few months at best. It is physically impossible for the human brain to absorb and learn a huge complex health care software system in a few months. As a software engineer familiar with these systems, I know that it takes many years for a computer programmer to learn and fix health care software. Often non technical individuals who are in corporate management underestimate the complexity of software engineering; they assume that the system is easy and that just a simple knowledge transfer for a couple of months will do the trick. The bonus check is on the way. Problem solved. Hide and watch, the problem is not solved, the problems with the system are just beginning.

tenminutetokyo . WHY are American workers such pushovers? DO NOT COOPERATE. DO NOT TRAIN. Get up, walk out instantly, and LEAVE. No training, nothing. Why are Americans so willing to give their valuable skills and knowledge up to these greedy companies and foreign workers? Just for a few dollars? You’re proabably going to run out of $ anyway. Have some COURAGE. Just walk and work like mad to find a new job ASAP. DO NOT HELP THESE COMPANIES SABOTAGE USA. DO NOT GIVE FOREIGN WORKERS ANY HELP. If every American did this, all this nonsense would stop REAL fast. REAL FAST. Stop being so afraid and weak. STOP AGREEING TO COOPERATE.
